Maintenance Supervisor

Job description

Under the supervision of the Senior Director – Projects & Maintenance plans, the Maintenance Supervisor plans and organizes the plant’s maintenance operations, manages and trains employees, and monitors the quality of maintenance and the compliance with safety measures.


Planning and organizing

  • Setting the work schedule and planning the Electrical Mechanic and Mechanic’s time to reach the objectives of the Maintenance Department.
  • Establishing the priorities, assess and measure the productivity and efficiency of the team.
  • Insuring an appropriate presence of their team in case of emergency and supporting operations during exceptional critical interventions.
  • Supporting operations during sanitation periods or factory shutdowns.
  • Planning and sustaining preventive, corrective and projected maintenance programs to minimize shutdown time.
  • Identifying the requirements, deadlines and budgets of the different projects related to the improvement of production equipment and performing the work within a reasonable timeframe, while maintaining constant communication between the departments throughout the projects.
  • Making minimal use of external contractors and checking on performance and costs with the approval of the immediate supervisor.
  • Contacting different providers for the purchasing of equipment and parts required for the maintenance and improvement of equipment.
  • Identifying issues, analyzing, summarizing, developing and formulating recommendations.
  • Implementing the chosen solutions after analysis.
  • Taking charge of the equipment’s upgrading.
  • Making sure that the employees have the correct tools and personal protective equipment to do the work.

Training, quality and safety

  • Making sure that the employees comply with the lockout procedures and the wearing of personal protective equipment at all times.
  • For all hot work performed by the employees, making sure that the Hot Work Permit is filled and attached to the work order.
  • Making sure that the maintenance employees use and manipulate cleaning products for their right use, while complying with the WHMIS safety standard. Checking if each product as an up-to-date data sheet.
  • Complying with the inherent regulations of food production (food safety) in the performance of every task.
  • Performing quality maintenance on the building and equipment.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work space (inventory storage, toolbox, etc.)


  • Performing data entry and follow ups in the maintenance software (creation, distribution, closing work orders).
  • Following up on documents to be filled out by the maintenance team.
  • Producing the necessary reports, upon request from the immediate supervisor.
  • Performing any related task, upon request from the immediate supervisor.

Staff Management

  • Supervising and coordinating the work of the maintenance team (Electrical Mechanics and Mechanics) for the workplace’s operations, minimizing overtime and ensuring the quality of their work with thorough follow-ups.
  • Guiding and supporting the team in the understanding and solving of technical issues related to the equipment.
  • Providing appropriate training for the maintenance team.
  • Supervising the internal and external collaborators before and during the different tasks.
  • Performing any related task, upon request from the immediate supervisor.


  • Implements and manages the plant’s maintenance program according to the best practices, while focusing on the preventive maintenance planning to improve equipment reliability;
  • Identifies and enforces maintenance work methods to improve production and quality;
  • Monitors and implements processes to improve the plant’s equipment and system reliability;
  • Ensures the maintenance department’s operations and training manuals are available and up-to-date;
  • Ensures that the maintenance team members receive optimal training;
  • Depending on the maintenance activity to be conducted, is in charge of looking for and choosing external experts to support the maintenance team;
  • Evaluates the current external companies’ performance and identifies other potential companies to improve the enterprise’s competitiveness.

Pertinent experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in supervising in a similar position in the manufacturing sector.
